Joomla's SEF feature will change the links on your website to something that is "human-readable". Instead of a link like www.mydomain.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=19&Itemid=27, the link might be www.mydomain.com/my-news. It is believed that this will make the site more "Search Engine Optimized" and ultimately rank higher in search results.

SEF URL example:
Joomla uses the "alias" field in the Article or Menu Item for the SEF URL, which Joomla will fill in for you or you can edit it.
To turn on Joomla's SEF:
1. On your webserver, the default Joomla installation has a file name "htaccess.txt". Change this file name to ".htaccess" if it hasn't been done already. You can do this using (a) your FTP client, (b) your webhost's file manager or (c) the Joomla eXtplorer component (available from http://extensions.joomla.org).
2. Open the Global Configuration screen (Site -> Global Configuration).
3. Under the "Site" tab, on the right side of the page, is a section named "SEO Settings".
a. Select Yes for "Search Engine Friendly URLs".
b. Select Yes for "Use Apache mod_rewrite". (This tutorial assumes your site is on an Apache webserver. Most shared webhosts, like Hostgator, Godaddy, etc., use Apache.)
c. Click Save.
4. Your site should now have Search-Engine-Friendly URLs.
