When creating a new menu item, the first screen is the Select Menu Item Type. There are four main types of menu items:

1. Internal Link: This links to a Joomla component. A Joomla component can have more than one layout option. For example, click on the Contacts link. There are two layout options to choose from: Contact Category Layout and Standard Contact Layout.

2. External Link: This is a link to another website. For example, the link could be to the Joomla.org website.

3. Separator: This creates an non-clickable link on the menu. The separator can be used to put an extra space between menu items, or a character (for example, the "|" symbol), or an image. However, the most common usage is to use it to show a dropdown list of sublevel menu items.

4. Alias: This copies a menu item from another menu to the current menu. The Alias type allows a menu item to exist in multiple menus without needing to duplicate the settings. All the settings from the original link will apply to the alias link, including modules assigned to that menu link.
