Caching can make your website pages load faster. Joomla has caching for pages, views and modules.
Page caching
Joomla's System Cache Plugin will save a page the first time it is displayed, and on subsequent visits to the page, will display this saved version of the page rather than accessing the database. This should speed up page load, however the data may not be up to date. A time limit is set, so that after x minutes, the Plugin will do a full refresh of the page and save a new cached page.
To enable page caching:
1. Go to Extensions -> Plugin Manager.
2. Open the plugin named "System - Cache".
3. Choose "yes" for Enabled on the left side of the screen.
4. On the right side of the screen in the Parameters section, set the number of mintes the cached page should be saved in "Cache Lifetime".
5. "Use Browser Caching" will save the cached page in the user's browser. This will save the page on the user's computer and send a message to the user's browser that the page has not changed and to get the copy that's saved on their computer. This is only useful if the user returns to a previously visited page during a browser session.
6. Important notes about Joomla's page caching:
- You can clear out all the cached pages and see up-to-date content on your site by going to Tools -> Clean Cache.
- If you have menus that highlight the current page, and the wrong links are highlighted, set your menu modules to "No Cache".
- Admin pages are not cached
- Only applies to website visitors who are not logged in
- Article hits will not be recorded
- Google Analytics and Google Adsense will still work, as well as any other javascript-based dynamic content
- Does not cache when the site is in debug mode
- If you have a very large site, you will need to determine if the cached pages being stored on your webserver are affecting the disk capacity limits or inode limits set by your webhost.
