1. Download a template. For this example, we will use RocketTheme's free template, AfterBurner. This template is one of the best free templates available. It has 8 preset styles to choose from, loads the webpages quickly, and is optimized for search engines. View a demo of the template here. Read more about the template's features here.
2. To download the AfterBurner template go to: http://www.rockettheme.com/joomla-templates/afterburner and click on the download under the heading "AfterBurner Template". Save the file to your computer.
3. Log in to the Joomla control panel on your website and go to the Extension Manager by clicking on Extensions -> Install/Uninstall.
4. Under "Upload Package File", click on Browse and select the template file from your computer.
5. Click "Upload File & Install".
6. Go to the Template Manager by clicking Extensions -> Template Manager.
7. On the list of site templates is a template named "rt_afterburner_j15". To make AfterBurner the default template for your site, click on the radio button to the left of the template name, then click the Default button near the top right (looks like a star).
8. Click on the Preview link to view your site. The modules on your site may look like they are "missing" or might be laid out differently than it was when you had another template. Each template has its own module position names and layouts, so when you switch templates you will have to look at your list of modules in the Module Manager and adjust the module position location accordingly.
