1. From your Joomla Control Panel, go to the Module Manager: Extensions -> Module Manager.
2. Click "New".
3. Select the module called "Custom HTML".
4. In the Title field, type in "My Module".
5. In the Show Title field, select whether or not you want the Title in to be displayed with the module content.
6. Enabled option: Choose whether this module should be published on the site. Selecting No will not display the module; selecting Yes will allow the module to be displayed on the site.
7. In the Position field, the default setting is "left". Choose a position from the dropdown or type in a new position name. Templates come with various module positions in their layout. The position you designate here must exist in your template for it to be displayed on the site. If you downloaded your template from a template club, the template demo should have a diagram of the module positions available for your template. As an example, look at the module positions of RocketTheme's Afterburner template: http://demo.rockettheme.com/free/afterburner/features/module-positions. If you are using this template, you can publish a module to "top", "left", "user1", "user2", etc.
8. In the Menu Assignment section shows a list of all the menus and menu links you have set up on your site. Here you can select which pages (menu links) on which you want the module to appear. The default is "All". If you want the module to appear on only some pages, change this selection to "Select Menu Items". Then click on the page(s) you want. For multiple pages, hold down the Control key on your keyboard while selecting pages from the list.
9. On the right side of the screen, in the Parameters section, there is a text field for "Module Class Suffix". This adds a class suffix to the module for styling purposes. Your template may have module class suffixes available. For example, the RocketTheme's Afterburner template has a module class suffix called "_menu" which makes the background color a dark orange and the text color is white (see http://demo.rockettheme.com/free/afterburner/features/example-modules).
10. Custom Output section at the bottom section of the screen: This "Custom HTML" module is used to output any text or html code you wish to display in the module. Type some sample text in this box.
11. Click the Save button.
12. Click the Preview link and view the module on the site.
