In the Menu Manager you can set up and configure the navigation menu(s) for your site. The navigation menu contains links to pages in your site.
1. Go to Menus -> Menu Manager (or use the QuickIcon for Menu Manager).
2. Here is a list of menus on your site. You can create a new menu, edit, copy and delete menus here.
3. Click on the "Menu Items" icon for the Main Menu (or any menu if you do not have one called "Main Menu") and click on the Home link.
4. Menu Item Type:
a. The first section of the Menu Item screen is the Menu Item Type.
b. There are 4 basic types of links available:
(i) Internal Link: These are links to the Joomla components installed on your system. A component link may also have layout options. For example, if you click on Web Links you will see there is a choice of linking to All Categories (a list of all categories), Category (Catgegory List Layout, or Web Link (Web Link Submission Layout).
(ii) External Link: a link to another website
(iii) Separator: a link that is not clickable. This might be an image or text between links, but most often it is used to show a dropdown, where the user will move there mouse over the link and a list of links appears below it, but the top link is not clickable
(iv) Alias: a copy of a link from another menu. For example, if you have a link on "Top Menu" that you also want on "Main Menu", use the Alias type to make a copy of it. The reason for this is that search engines may penalize your site for having "duplicate" content.
5. Menu Item Details:
a. Title: the title that will appear on the menu as a link
b. Alias: will be assigned by the system when you save the link, or you can type in the alias. This is used for SEF (Search Engine Friendly) URLs. If you set your site to use SEF URLs, for example, the URL to a page might be www.mydomain.com/recent-news instead of www.mydomain.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=94&Itemid=34.
c. Link: usually assigned by Joomla, with the exception being for External Links which are assigned by the Administrator when creating the link.
d. Display in: the menu in which the link is displayed.
e. Parent Item: if the menu link is a sublink of another menu item (for example on a dropdown menu, indicate the parent item (the link under which the sublink will be displayed). In the example screenshot, the "What's New in 1.5?" sublink appears when "Joomla! Overview" (the parent link) is clicked. In some template designs it might appear as a dropdown, or as an indented link below the parent item.
f. Published: set to "yes" to display the link the menu, "no" to hide the link.
g. Order: set the order in which the current link appears on the menu.
h. Access Level:
(i) Public: everyone can see the link
(ii) Registered: only registered users who are logged in can see the link
(iii) Special: only users who are logged in and designated as any level above "Registered" can view the link. For example, Administrators, Publishers, Managers, etc., can view the link, but not regular Registered users.
i. On Click, Open in: set whether the link opens in the same window, or if it will open a new browser window. For example, if the user is using Internet Explorer, it will open a new instance of Internet Explorer on their computer.
6. Parameters: On the right side of the screen are the parameters for the Menu Item. This will vary by Menu Item Type. Some types may not have any parameters. For details on the parameters for the Joomla core components, see the Reference Guide.
