This should not happen. Are you using Joomla's core SEF? If so, you need to:
1. Set "SEF URLs" to "Yes"
2. Set "Set Apache mod_rewrite" to "Yes"
3. Rename the "htaccess.txt" file on your server to ".htaccess"
